The temperature displayed in the Weather24 app may differ from the temperature that a private thermometer on the window, balcony or in the garden measures. Such differences are normal and do not automatically mean that one of the values is incorrect.
Why do these differences occur?
The temperature information in the app is based on weather station data and calculated weather data for the selected region. The displayed value therefore does not necessarily need to have been measured exactly at your location.
Professional weather stations measure air temperature under specified conditions. These include:
- a measuring height of approximately two metres above ground,
- a sensor protected from radiation and weather,
- air circulation that is as unobstructed as possible,
- suitable ground, preferably natural, and
- sufficient distance from buildings, walls and other heat sources.
These uniform conditions make the measured values from different weather stations more comparable.
What factors affect a private thermometer?
A thermometer on your house measures the temperature directly at its location. The value can therefore be altered by local influences, for example:
- direct sunlight or shade,
- heated walls, roofs and ground surfaces,
- mounting on the window or balcony,
- lack of air circulation or wind protection,
- the height of the measuring point, and
- the buildings and characteristics of the immediate surroundings.
In particular, direct sunlight and the heat stored by buildings can cause a private thermometer to display a significantly higher temperature.
Is the app temperature unreliable?
No. The app and your thermometer can represent different conditions or locations. The app shows a representative temperature value for the selected region, whilst your thermometer captures the immediate microclimate at its location.
Deviations of several degrees are therefore possible – particularly with strong sunlight, little wind or large differences in altitude within a region.
