The hourly precipitation charts and rain intensity bars in our forecast view help you plan rain events in detail. To help you interpret these graphics correctly, we explain the key basics here.
Two Different Data Sources
Our rain display combines two different sources of information:
First 2 hours: During this period, the precipitation charts are based on measured radar data. These show real precipitation events captured in real time and their short-term development with high accuracy.
After 2 hours: The charts then show calculated forecasts from weather models. As the forecast period increases, the uncertainty of these predictions increases.
Understanding Rain Intensity Bars
The coloured bars represent the amount of precipitation in litres per square metre. The higher the bar, the more intense the expected rain. Please note that:
- Small rain cells and local showers can change in the short term
- The location and intensity of thunderstorms are difficult to predict
- Deviations between the display and actual precipitation in your area are normal
Why Can Forecasts Be Inaccurate?
Even if the chart shows rain, it's possible that not a drop falls where you are. This is due to several factors:
Radar false echoes: The rain radar can show reflections and interference that are not actual precipitation.
Point accuracy: The forecast refers to a larger area, not your exact location.
Rapid Changes: Rain cells can form very quickly, weaken or change their path in the short term.
Tips for Practical Use
In the first two hours, rely more on the radar data than on longer-term forecasts. For important planning, check the updated charts several times, as the forecasts are continuously updated with new data.
