The problem: Confusion with wind direction information in the forecast
Many users of the Weather24 app and website report confusion when the weather forecast shows wind directions such as "West", "Southwest" or "Central". Particularly users from smaller regions or districts want to understand how these large-scale directional indications affect their exact location.
How do the wind direction indications work?
Wind direction describes the geographical direction from which the wind originates – in other words, where the wind is coming from:
- West: The wind comes from a westerly direction (from the left when you are facing north)
- Southwest: The wind comes from the southwestern corner
- Central: The wind comes from the central region of Germany
What does this mean for my location?
These indications refer to large-scale air currents that apply to larger regions. For example, if you live near Mainz-Kostheim and the forecast shows "westerly wind", this means that air masses are flowing in from the west – regardless of whether you live in the west, east or middle of Germany.
Note: Your exact location is already taken into account by the localised weather report. The wind direction information supplements this information with large-scale atmospheric patterns.
Do you need further help?
If you are unsure which forecast applies to your exact location, please check that you have added the correct location in the app. You can check and adjust your locations at any time in the settings.
